about

Before the 2020 COVID pandemic and related isolation, I was working on a multichannel sound art piece to accompany an art exhibit by George Blaha at Wedge Projects in Chicago.

Borrowing heavily from Brian Eno, the plan was to have 27 music and sound pieces on each of three audio systems evenly spaced around the triangular room, and set to play on “random.” The pieces included several created just for the exhibit, plus a handful of music from my releases as Reader Advisor. (readeradvisor.bandcamp.com)

I used wind chimes, singing bowls, animal sounds, chair noises, jet plane roar, electric guitar, a generative music program, electronic devices (guitar effect pedals) and computer software.

As originally envisioned, as one walked around the exhibit space, the balance between the three sound systems would shift, creating a unique “mix,” so that even if one somehow experienced what was playing a second time, it would nonetheless sound different -- unless it emanated from the same three speakers and you were standing in the exact same place (unlikely).

Unfortunately, it was never produced “live” due to the disruption caused by the pandemic.

To assemble this audio piece, I wrote down the numbers 1 to 27, plus five increments of silence, and chose them randomly to fill three digital audio tracks for around an hour each. I tinkered with it a little bit to add more "air" and "space," so it came out to roughly 80 minutes.

My hope is that this captures some of the spirit and intention of the piece, though the listener cannot walk around the gallery space.

P.S. While I was preparing this music for release, the police killed George Floyd in Minneapolis. The album title stands.
